The Siaya Kenya Children Foundation is non-profit making initiative founded in January 2006 as an intervention to alleviate suffering of the orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in society. The foundation seeks to address the problems of less fortunate children by facilitating their access to educational opportunities.
The foundation operates in Siaya subcounty, Siaya County in Kenya. Siaya is a town situated along the equator and on longitude 34⁰E. The average altitude is 1300m above sea level, and temperature has average of about 24⁰C. The major economic activity is subsistence farming.
The major challenges facing the people of Siaya are poverty and HIV/AIDs pandemic, unemployment and child labour. These challenges have impacted on the children and women very negatively. We have a number of deaths resulting from poverty related issues like malnutrition and HIV/AIDs related diseases. These have formed a vicious circle such that poverty has enhanced spread of HIV/AIDs and AIDs related diseases has equally accelerated poverty.
The Siaya Kenya Children Foundation therefore attempts to assist these orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) realize their cherished dreams. The foundation helps these children access their high school and give some minimal support with basic needs to some very desperate young children.
The foundation is legally registered by the Government of Kenya under the Ministry of youth affairs and sports. It got re-registration with the Ministry of Gender and social services to operate as Community Based Organisation(C.B.O). Its focal area is Karemo Division of Siaya county. The formal registration by relevant government departments makes it mandatory for management board to operate within the laws of the country and county government of Siaya. All activities and operations of the foundation are guided by registered constitution of SKCF with the relevant government departments.
Children considered under this program are supported financially, morally and psychologically. We counsel the children quarterly during the school holidays.
The foundation has so far supported over 200 children out of which over 150 have successfully completed the high school. Some have already got admission at the Universities, and middle colleges. The foundation started with 8 children in 2006 and is currently having 68 children in the program.
The foundation sincerely appreciates the role played by Mr. Rolf Hotz of Urdorf Switzerland and the late Charles Atinga for initiating this noble idea. The SKCF –SWISS board headed by Mr. Charles Cornu as president has done marvelous job in resources mobilization. We do also appreciate the support we have got from ALL friends of SKCF who have materially, financially supported our programs in Kenya. We have a number of our children now with bright future because they got fees and some are lucky to have God parents.
